Kuratowski, a Polish mathematician whose father came from an assimilated family of Jewish descent, was a leading figure of the Warsaw School of mathematics working in topology and set theory. He is best known for Kuratowski's theorem, which characterizes planar graphs by forbidden subgraphs, and for his axiomatic definition of the ordered pair and closure operators. He led the Polish Academy of Sciences' mathematics institute after the Second World War.
