Sir Michael Epstein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Gairdner Award (biomedicine)
Anthony Epstein, a British pathologist of Jewish background born in London, was inspired by a lecture on Burkitt's lymphoma in African children to hunt for a viral cause. With Yvonne Barr and Bert Achong he examined cultured tumour cells and in 1964 identified the first human cancer virus, now called the Epstein–Barr virus. EBV is linked to several cancers and to infectious mononucleosis, and his discovery founded the field of tumour virology in humans. He lived to 102.
