How & why

Sachs was born in Vienna to a Jewish family that fled Nazi Austria for Scotland, where he trained in medicine before a career at UCLA. He discovered the gastric proton pump (the H+/K+ ATPase), the molecular machine that secretes stomach acid, and led the development of proton-pump inhibitors that treat ulcers and reflux for hundreds of millions of patients. He received the Canadian Gairdner International Award in 2004.
