Biography

Judah Folkman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Surgeon who founded the field of angiogenesis research, opening a new approach to cancer therapy; Gairdner Award in biomedicine

How & why

Folkman, the son of a rabbi and raised in an observant Jewish home in Cleveland, proposed in 1971 that tumours cannot grow without recruiting new blood vessels — angiogenesis — an idea long dismissed by colleagues. His persistence founded a whole field and led to anti-angiogenic drugs now used against cancer and eye disease. He received many honours including the National Medal of Science nomination and Wolf-level recognition in medicine.
