Weiss, a Canadian neurobiologist documented among Jewish scientists, trained at McGill and the University of Calgary, where he built his career. In 1992, with Brent Reynolds, he overturned the long-held dogma that the adult mammalian brain cannot make new neurons by discovering neural stem cells in the adult brain. This finding opened new avenues for brain repair and regenerative neuroscience and earned him the Canada Gairdner International Award in 2008.
