Simon Thassi is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Hasmonean leader who won recognition of Judean independence in 142 BCE and took the Acra citadel in Jerusalem.
Simon, second son of Mattathias, was the last of the brothers to lead the revolt, ruling from 142 to 134 BCE. In 142 BCE he obtained from the Seleucid king a remission of tribute that amounted to recognition of Judean independence, and in 142/141 BCE he took the Acra citadel in Jerusalem, ending the last foreign garrison in the city. He secured the port of Jaffa and the fortress of Gezer, and in 141 BCE a popular assembly confirmed him as leader and High Priest. He was assassinated at the fortress of Dok near Jericho in 134 BCE by his son-in-law Ptolemy; his son John Hyrcanus continued the dynasty. He is documented in 1 Maccabees and by Flavius Josephus.
