Salome Alexandra (Shelamzion) is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Hasmonean queen (c. 76-67 BCE) who doubled the Judean army and used deterrence and diplomacy to keep the kingdom out of war.
Salome Alexandra was the last sovereign ruler of an independent Hasmonean Judea, reigning from about 76 to 67 BCE after the death of her husband Alexander Jannaeus. According to Flavius Josephus she roughly doubled the size of the Judean army and maintained a mercenary force, using that strength to deter attack rather than to make war. When Tigranes II of Armenia advanced on Syria around 72/71 BCE she negotiated his withdrawal, and her reign was remembered as a period of internal peace. Her Hebrew name Shelamzion appears in Dead Sea Scroll fragments (4Q331, 4Q332), giving her an independent documentary attestation alongside Josephus.
