Biography

Shikma Bressler is recognized among Israeli contributors to Science & Medicine — Particle physicist at the Weizmann Institute of Science who develops radiation detectors and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model with the ATLAS experiment at CERN; co-founder of the Black Flag protest movement (2020)

How & why

Origins and early life

Shikma Bressler was born in Haifa on 10 July 1980, the second of four children of a physician mother and of a father who worked at Elbit Systems, and grew up on Kibbutz Gvat and in Timrat.

Work and career

As a girl she played basketball for Hapoel Galil Elyon and for Israel's youth national teams, and after her army service she played for Hapoel Haifa until an injury ended her playing days. She then studied at the Technion in Haifa, where she took a bachelor's degree with distinction in physics and mathematics, a master's degree in physics in 2006 and a doctorate in 2011. She joined the Weizmann Institute of Science in 2012 and in 2013 founded her own group there, which develops radiation detectors and, within the ATLAS collaboration at CERN, searches the collider's data for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Recognition

The Weizmann Institute gave her its Charles Clore research prize in 2016, the Israel Physical Society awarded her its Nathan Rosen prize for young experimental physicists in 2021, and she was named associate professor in November 2023. In March 2020 she founded, with two of her brothers and two family friends, the Black Flag protest movement against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and in 2023 she was among the leaders of the protests against the government's judicial reform, including a five-day march from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in July.

No source states her Jewish identity in so many words, and the biography of an Israeli scientist has little reason to mention it. She is here under the Israeli presumption the site adopted on 7 September 2026 and extended on 15 October 2026 — a Hebrew given name, an Ashkenazi surname, a life in Israel and a strong attested tie, here a childhood on Kibbutz Gvat and a place in Israel's youth national teams — which is a presumption and not a declaration, and which any contrary source overturns.
