Hirschfelder was an American physicist and a founder of theoretical chemistry who worked on the Manhattan Project — heading the ordnance ballistics effort — and later co-authored the classic 'Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids'. He received the National Medal of Science in 1976 for contributions to atomic and molecular quantum mechanics and reaction-rate theory. He was born to a Jewish family in Baltimore.
