How & why

Kitaigorodskii was an oceanographer who developed the similarity theory of wind-generated ocean surface waves, whose 1961 hypothesis underlies the widely used Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum and modern understanding of air-sea interaction and the ocean mixed layer. He later worked in the United States, notably at Johns Hopkins. He had documented Jewish ancestry through his father, the physicist Alexander Kitaigorodskii.
