Dyer was an ocean acoustician who headed MIT's department of ocean engineering and made lasting contributions to underwater sound, ocean ambient noise, structural acoustics and reverberation, and led pioneering Arctic acoustic field programs. His clarity as a teacher shaped a generation of acousticians. Born in Brooklyn to a Jewish family whose parents had fled the Pale of Settlement, he later helped resettle Soviet Jewish refugees.
