Samuel ha-Nagid was a statesman, army commander, Talmudic scholar, and one of the greatest Hebrew poets of the Golden Age of Spain, serving as vizier and battlefield general of the Muslim kingdom of Granada. As Nagid he led Andalusian Jewry while producing a large body of Hebrew poetry on war, wine, love, and faith. He was a devout Jew and a leading figure of medieval Sephardic Jewish culture.
