How & why

Sam Shapiro was a biostatistician and epidemiologist who, with radiologist Philip Strax, designed and analyzed the Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York trial, the first randomized study to prove that mammographic screening reduces breast-cancer mortality. In 1988 he became the first non-physician to receive the General Motors–Kettering Cancer Research Prize. He is documented as Jewish among the prize's Jewish recipients.
