Strax was a radiologist who pioneered mammography for the early detection of breast cancer and led the landmark Health Insurance Plan (HIP) study, the first randomized trial to show that screening reduces breast-cancer mortality; the work was recognized among the honors of cancer research including Sloan-Kettering–linked awards. He was born into a Jewish family in New York and was Jewish. His screening advocacy followed his wife's death from breast cancer.
