Wall was an American natural-products chemist who, with Mansukh Wani at the Research Triangle Institute, isolated and identified two landmark anticancer compounds from plants: camptothecin (from a Chinese tree) and paclitaxel/Taxol (from the Pacific yew), which became standard chemotherapy drugs. For this the pair shared the 2000 General Motors Cancer Research Foundation Kettering Prize. His religious background is not documented in the biographical sources consulted.
