According to the biblical narrative in Judges 4-5, Deborah was a prophetess and judge who led Israel and summoned Barak son of Abinoam to gather ten thousand men against the chariot forces of Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor. She went with the army herself and the victory at the Kishon river is celebrated in the Song of Deborah, one of the oldest poetic passages in the Hebrew Bible. She stands out as a woman holding both judicial and military authority in an ancient Near Eastern text. Attestation note: Deborah is known only from the biblical text; there is no independent archaeological or documentary evidence for her.
