Rudolph Charousek

Rudolf Charousek was a Bohemian-born Hungarian chess master who, in a career of only about four years, rose to be one of the world's top ten players in the 1890s. He famously defeated world champion Emanuel Lasker and finished no worse than second in his tournaments before dying of tuberculosis at twenty-six. He was born near Prague to a Jewish family of modest means.
