How & why

Kompfner, trained as an architect, invented the traveling-wave tube in 1943, a broadband microwave amplifier that became essential to radar, satellite communications and long-distance telephony. Of Jewish origin, he left Vienna for Britain in the 1930s and later led work at Bell Labs. His invention underpinned much of postwar telecommunications.
