Biography

Hans Motz is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; invented the undulator, precursor of the free-electron laser

How & why

Hans Motz was an Austrian-British physicist and engineer at Oxford who conceived and in 1953 built the first 'undulator' (wiggler), a periodic magnet array that makes relativistic electrons emit intense radiation — the principle behind synchrotron light sources and the free-electron laser. Jewish, he left Austria for Britain amid the Nazi threat and pursued his career at Oxford.
