The daughter of Jewish immigrants in the Bronx, Yalow overcame barriers facing women in physics to co-develop radioimmunoassay (RIA) with Solomon Berson — an ultra-sensitive technique using radioactive tracers to measure tiny concentrations of hormones and other substances in blood. RIA revolutionized medical diagnostics, from diabetes to hormone disorders. In 1977 she became the second woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and she declined to patent the method so it could spread freely.
