How & why

Glowinski was a French-American applied mathematician, a leading figure in the numerical solution of partial differential equations and variational inequalities, whose methods are used across computational science and engineering; he received the von Kármán Prize in 2004. He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and held a chair at the University of Houston. He was the son of Polish Jewish immigrants who were hidden by French families in the countryside during the Holocaust.
