Biography

Elaine Oran is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Pioneer of computational combustion; APS Fluid Dynamics Prize (2013)

How & why

Oran is an American physical scientist regarded as a world authority on numerical methods for large-scale simulation, especially of combustion, detonation and the transition to detonation, work she long pursued at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and later at Texas A&M; she received the APS Fluid Dynamics Prize in 2013. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Widely available biographies document her scientific career but do not record a Jewish identity; she appears on a subject roster of Jews in continuum mechanics.
