Biography

Isadore Singer is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Co-author of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem uniting analysis and topology; Abel Prize (2004)

How & why

The son of Polish Jewish immigrants in Detroit, Singer joined analysis, geometry and topology in the Atiyah–Singer index theorem (1963), which connects the number of solutions of differential equations to the topology of the underlying space. The result became a bridge between pure mathematics and theoretical physics, especially gauge theory. He shared the Abel Prize in 2004.
