Biography

Roger W. Straus Jr. is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Co-founded Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1946 and made it the most decorated literary house in America — more than twenty of its authors have won the Nobel.

How & why

Roger Williams Straus Jr. was born in New York and, in the words of his Wikipedia article, 'raised in a wealthy and influential Jewish family': a Guggenheim on his mother's side, a Straus on his father's, and grandson of Oscar Straus, the first Jew to sit in an American cabinet. He could have gone into the family businesses and instead started a publishing house. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, founded in 1946, became the most decorated literary imprint in the United States — more than twenty of its authors have won the Nobel Prize — and Straus ran it as an independent for nearly sixty years, refusing to let it be swallowed.
