Biography

Artur Brauner is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Holocaust survivor who founded CCC-Filmkunst in Berlin in 1946 and produced more than 300 films, many of them about the crime he had escaped.

How & why

Artur Brauner was born Abraham Brauner, the eldest son of a Jewish family in Łódź. He survived the German occupation in hiding and in flight; forty-nine members of his family did not. In 1946 he founded CCC-Filmkunst in Berlin — in the ruins of the country that had tried to kill him — and produced more than three hundred films over seventy years. Many of them were made against the grain of what German audiences wanted: Morituri (1948) on the escape from a camp, Der Garten der Finzi-Contini, Hitlerjunge Salomon. He was a prominent member of Berlin's Jewish community and held the Federal Cross of Merit. He died in Berlin at 100.
