Biography

Bernard Delfont is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Impresario who staged more than two hundred shows in London and New York, presented the Royal Variety Performance for twenty years, and led EMI's leisure division and then First Leisure.

How & why

Bernard Delfont was born Boris Isaakovich Winogradsky in Tokmak, the second son of Jewish parents, Isaac and Olga Winogradsky; his brothers were Lew Grade and Leslie Grade. The family reached the East End of London in 1912 and he left school at twelve. He danced professionally — The Delfont Boys — before becoming an agent in 1937 and entering theatrical management in 1949, acquiring West End theatres, turning the London Hippodrome into the Talk of the Town, and bringing the Folies Bergère outside Paris for the first time.

He presented more than two hundred shows in London and New York, and the Royal Variety Performance every year from 1958 to 1978. He led EMI's leisure division, became chief executive of EMI in 1979, and in 1983 headed the management buyout that put him at the head of First Leisure Corporation. Knighted in 1974, made a life peer in 1976.
