How & why

Aaron Lansky founded the Yiddish Book Center in 1980 and organized a worldwide rescue of Yiddish books that were being discarded as the generation that read them passed away, recovering well over a million volumes and digitizing them for scholars and libraries. His effort saved a vast body of modern Jewish literature from extinction and earned a MacArthur 'genius' fellowship. He is Jewish and a lifelong advocate of Yiddish culture.
