Roger Kornberg is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Studies of the molecular basis of eukaryotic transcription
Kornberg, from a Jewish scientific family — his father Arthur Kornberg also won a Nobel Prize — worked at Stanford to reveal how genetic information is read out inside complex cells. Using X-ray crystallography, he captured detailed three-dimensional pictures of RNA polymerase caught in the act of copying DNA into RNA, the essential step of transcription. These images showed the machinery of gene expression atom by atom and earned him the sole 2006 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
