Berg, from a Jewish family in Brooklyn, was a biochemist at Stanford when in 1972 he combined DNA from two different organisms into a single molecule — the first recombinant DNA. This technique of cutting and splicing genes launched the entire field of genetic engineering and modern biotechnology. Acutely aware of the risks, he also led scientists in calling for caution, helping organize the 1975 Asilomar conference on safety, and he received the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his studies of nucleic acids.
