Rodrigo de Castro is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Hamburg physician; pioneer of medical ethics and gynecology in early modern Europe

How & why

Rodrigo de Castro was a Portuguese-born physician active in Hamburg whose De universa mulierum medicina (1603) was the first comprehensive gynecology treatise by a Portuguese author, earning him a reputation as a founder of the field, and whose Medicus-Politicus advanced early modern medical ethics. Born into a converso family of Jewish origin, he fled the Inquisition around 1590 and openly returned to Judaism in Hamburg under the name David Namias.
