How & why

Elijah (Eliahu) de Luna Montalto was a Portuguese-born physician and medical author who, raised as a Christian, openly returned to Judaism in Venice before becoming personal physician to Queen Marie de' Medici at the French court. His prestige was such that the Crown allowed him to practice Judaism at a time when Jews were barred from France, and after his death his body was carried to Amsterdam for Jewish burial. He was a professing Jew and a noted anti-Christian polemicist and medical writer.
