Albert Salomon

Salomon was a German surgeon whose 1913 study of some 3,000 mastectomy specimens, comparing X-rays to the removed tissue, revealed how tumors and microcalcifications appear on film — work regarded as the origin of mammography and thus of early breast-cancer detection. He was a Jewish physician dismissed from the University of Berlin in 1933 under the Nazis; he was the father of the artist Charlotte Salomon and later emigrated, dying in Amsterdam.
