Kraichnan was a theoretical physicist who developed influential statistical theories of turbulence, including the direct-interaction approximation and the theory of two-dimensional turbulence. Once an assistant to Albert Einstein at Princeton, he was born into a Jewish family and was Jewish. His work is foundational to modern turbulence theory.
