How & why

Richard Garwin was an American physicist who, at age 23, produced the actual design of the first hydrogen bomb tested in 1952, and went on to contribute to technologies ranging from MRI and touchscreens to GPS and reconnaissance satellites while advising presidents on national security and arms control. He received the National Medal of Science (2002) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2016). Garwin was born into a Jewish family in Cleveland.
