Rav Ashi was the head of the academy of Sura in Babylonia and, according to tradition, the chief redactor of the Babylonian Talmud. Over decades he organized the vast oral debates of the sages into an ordered compilation that became the central text of rabbinic Judaism and the foundation of Jewish law and study to this day. He was a Jewish sage (amora).
