Rav (Abba Arikha) is recognized among Jewish contributors to Historical & Religious Figures — Founder of the academy at Sura and a central architect of the Babylonian Talmud
Abba Arikha, known simply as Rav, was a first-generation Babylonian amora who studied in the Land of Israel under Judah ha-Nasi before returning home to found the academy at Sura around 219 CE. That academy became a centre of Torah learning for centuries and, with its counterpart at Pumbedita, produced the Babylonian Talmud. Rav's rulings and teachings, cited throughout the Talmud, make him one of the central architects of rabbinic Judaism.
