Judah the Prince (Judah ha-Nasi, 'Rabbi') was the leading Jewish sage of his generation who, around 200 CE, compiled and edited the Mishnah, the first great written collection of the Jewish Oral Law and the foundational core around which the Talmud was built. As Nasi (patriarch) he led the Jewish community of Roman Palestine and combined religious authority with political standing. A Jewish scholar of the tannaitic era, he was traditionally regarded as a descendant of the House of David.
