Abaye is recognized among Jewish contributors to Historical & Religious Figures — Babylonian Amora whose legal debates with Rava shape Talmudic reasoning
Abaye was a Babylonian amora and head of the academy of Pumbedita whose sustained legal debates with his colleague Rava are quoted throughout the Talmud. Their disputes — 'the discussions of Abaye and Rava' — became a byword for rigorous Talmudic reasoning, and in nearly all cases the law follows Rava. He was a foundational Jewish sage of the Talmudic era.
