Rachmiel Levine is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Endocrinologist who showed that insulin acts by promoting glucose transport into cells.

How & why

Orphaned young — his father died in an anti-Jewish riot in Ukraine — Levine was raised in Montreal and trained at McGill before a long American career, notably at City of Hope in California. In 1949 he showed that insulin's primary action is to promote the transport of glucose across the cell membrane, earning him the title 'father of modern diabetes research.' He was Jewish.
