Origins and early life
Philippe Berry was born Philippe Simon Benguigui in Paris on 18 May 1956, into a Jewish family of Oran in French Algeria; his parents, Moïse Benguigui and Stella Valency, were shopkeepers who had come to France, and his elder brother is the actor and director Richard Berry.
Work and career
He came to sculpture late, after other trades, and began working in bronze in 1992, showing his first pieces at the FIAC art fair in Paris the following year. His subject was almost always the animal, handled with a deliberate lightness that the art world took a while to forgive: rabbits standing upright with their ears crossed, bears, elephants and hippopotamuses at monumental scale, often placed outdoors where children could climb on them.
He worked in painting and drawing as well, and his sculptures were shown by galleries from Paris and Saint-Tropez to New York, and installed in public squares in France and abroad. With the actress and director Josiane Balasko he was the father of the actress Marilou Berry. He died on 5 September 2019, at sixty-three.
