Origins and early life
Marilou Berry was born in the thirteenth arrondissement of Paris on 1 February 1983, the daughter of the sculptor Philippe Berry, born Benguigui into a Jewish family of Oran in French Algeria, and of the actress and director Josiane Balasko, who is of Yugoslav descent and not Jewish; her uncle is the actor Richard Berry. Her inclusion here rests on that documented paternal line, not on a name, and she has not made her Jewish descent a public subject.
She was twenty-one when Agnès Jaoui cast her in Comme une image in 2004 as Lolita, the overlooked daughter of a celebrated writer, a performance that took the film to Cannes and brought Berry a César nomination as most promising actress.
Work and career
She turned afterwards to popular comedy, in Vilaine, Joséphine and their sequels, becoming one of the reliable comic leads of French cinema in the 2010s. She moved behind the camera with Joséphine s'arrondit in 2016 and Quand on crie au loup in 2019, and she has worked on stage and in television as well.
