How & why

Anatole Dauman was born in Warsaw in 1925 to a Russian Jewish family and emigrated to France. Through Argos Films he became the producer who made the difficult films possible: Alain Resnais's Nuit et brouillard, the first great film on the camps, and Hiroshima mon amour; Chris Marker; Robert Bresson; Jean-Luc Godard; Andrei Tarkovsky's Sacrifice; Nagisa Oshima; and Wim Wenders's Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire. Argos also produced Chronique d'un été by Jean Rouch and the sociologist Edgar Morin, the film that opened cinéma vérité.
