Aghion was born in Paris to a Jewish family of Egyptian origin; his parents were Egyptian Jews who had settled in France. An economist working between Paris, Harvard and the LSE, he formalized 'creative destruction' into a mathematical theory of innovation-driven growth (the Aghion–Howitt model), showing how new technologies displace old ones to drive long-run prosperity. He shared the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences and earlier received the John von Neumann Award (2009).
