Leder, from a Washington Jewish family, worked with Marshall Nirenberg on the Nirenberg–Leder experiments that deciphered which triplets of RNA code for which amino acids, helping crack the genetic code. He later mapped how antibody genes are assembled to generate immune diversity and founded Harvard's genetics department. He received the National Medal of Science in 1989.
