Koshland was a biochemist at UC Berkeley who proposed the induced-fit model of enzyme action, showing that an enzyme changes shape to accommodate its substrate rather than fitting it rigidly like a lock and key, transforming understanding of catalysis and regulation. He later served as editor-in-chief of Science and received the National Medal of Science in 1990. He was born into a prominent Jewish family (the Koshland and Haas families of Levi Strauss & Co.).
