How & why

David G. Nathan is an American physician who helped found the field of pediatric hematology, developed with Yuet Wai Kan the first prenatal diagnostic tests for thalassemia and sickle-cell disease, and advanced hydroxyurea as the first successful treatment for sickle-cell anemia. A Harvard professor and former president of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, he received the National Medal of Science in 1990. He is Jewish.
