Baran, an engineer at the RAND Corporation, developed in the early 1960s the concept of distributed communication networks in which messages are broken into blocks and routed independently — an idea that, alongside Donald Davies' work, became packet switching, the foundation of the Internet. He was born into a Jewish family in Grodno and emigrated to the United States as a child.
