Kleinrock is a computer scientist whose work on the mathematical theory of packet-switched networks and queueing helped lay the foundations of the Internet; his UCLA lab sent the first message over the ARPANET in 1969. He was born into a Jewish family in New York and is a recipient of the U.S. National Medal of Science.
