How & why
Andrew Viterbi was born Andrea Viterbi into an Italian Jewish family that fled Mussolini's antisemitic racial laws for the United States. He devised the Viterbi algorithm for decoding convolutional codes, now fundamental to digital communications, and co-founded Qualcomm.
