Otto Stern is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; the Stern-Gerlach experiment and molecular beam method, Nobel Prize 1943
Born into a Jewish family, Stern began as a theoretical physical chemist before pioneering the molecular-beam method, sending controlled streams of atoms through a vacuum to measure their properties directly. With Walther Gerlach in 1922 he demonstrated space quantization, proving that atomic magnetic moments take discrete values — a cornerstone of quantum mechanics. Forced out of Germany by the Nazi regime in 1933 because he was Jewish, he continued his work in the United States and won the 1943 Nobel Prize in Physics for the molecular-beam method and the discovery of the proton's magnetic moment.
